PODCAST TAGS AND iTUNES

This page demonstrates how the various tags in a podcast feed appear in the iTunes Store and in iTunes when subscribing.
Click on a tag to see its position in a sample basic feed and some additional information. The illustrations are from version 10; iTunes 11 has a different layout but the basics are the same - see the notes under each image.

IN THE iTUNES STORE

In iTunes 11 the display is similar though there is no  'Now playing' area at the bottom of the sidebar, and the sidebar itself is hidden by default (it can be re-enabled from the 'View' menu).

WHEN SUBSCRIBED IN iTUNES

For information on how to embed images in the media files please see this page.

In iTunes 11 there is no 'cover flow' or image at bottom left and the sidebar is hidden by default. The 'List' view is otherwise similar to the image above; the default 'Podcasts' view displays the itunes:summary and not the itunes:subtitle.

Other tags:

<language> - the language of your podcast.

<itunes:explicit> - if 'yes' an 'explicit' graphic will appear for the episode so tagged or for the entire podcast.

<copyright> - does not appear.

<itunes:keywords> - can be entered for the podcast or for episodes: they do not appear but are searchable.

<itunes:owner> - does not appear, is included for contact purposes only.

<enclosure> - carries the URL of the media file for the episode. This must be a full URL including the http:// and the server name.

<guid> - a unique text string used to identify each episode as separate from the others. The URL of the media file can be used.

<itunes:new-feed-url> - does not appear: is used to redirect iTunes to a new URL, enclosed in the tag, and should only be used when a redirect is required.
